Agents of the Chinese Communist Party in Los Angeles and New York
I created this summary on Dec. 23, 2024, for the California Insider interview based on the U.S. Department of Justice reports.
I. Mike (Yaoning) Sun, campaign manager of Arcadia council member Eileen Wang in 2022, was arrested on December 17, 2024, for being a CCP (Chinese Communist Party) agent. He is the third arrested member of a group of CCP agents (with 7 - 8 members, according to a DOJ criminal complaint). John (Jun) Chen, leader of this group, and Feng Lin were arrested in May 2023. Chen and Lin were sentenced to 20 and 16 months in prison, respectively, in November 2024.
II. Main projects of this CCP agent group:
A. Manipulate political elections
1. Help Beijing-favored candidates to be elected. In a conversation with PRC government officials, Chen referred to the candidate as being part of a “basic team dedicated for us.”
2. Through their elected candidate, approach other elected officials, such as current Los Angeles County Supervisors. Instruction from the PRC " ... we internally are willing to provide the preliminary funding for you to socialize with the former county supervisor, but not a lot at once, it will be enough for meals and conference, but if you succeed in contacting with the current one, I believe the support will increase ..."
B. Threaten Chinese dissident groups
1. John Chen and Feng Lin were arrested in May 2023 because they bribed an IRS agent with $5,000 in a plot to deprive the non-profit status of Shen Yun, a performing arts company by Falun Gong. They offered to pay another $50k if the action was successful.
2. John Chen publically threatened Taiwanese activists. In a YouTube video posted on September 15, 2019, Chen can be seen with a megaphone at a pro-Taiwan protest in Los Angeles threatening protesters, saying: “If you have a Chinese passport, and I take your photo now, you will be arrested when you return to China. If you hold a U.S. passport, you won’t be able to obtain a Chinese visa.”
C. Operate a media outlet called "U.S. Media Center"
1. The media can promote CCP views.
2. They planned to do a nationwide campaign to defame Falun Gong before the core member was arrested in May 2023.
III. How this CCP agent group function
1. Regularly visit China to meet their supervisors and get funding. They wrote reports and proposals about their successful projects (for example, got Eileen Wang elected) and applied for funding for future projects (for example, asking for $80k to form a pro-China performing group for a parade in D.C.)
2. John Chen claimed he received $250k 30 years ago to immigrate to the U.S. for this job. He openly claimed that he worked as an agent for the CCP and that the CCP network in the U.S. was strong enough to protect him.
IV. Linda Sun, another CCP agent case in New York State
1. Blocked Taiwanese delegates from meeting NY officials
2. Persuaded NY officials to thank China during COVID, and not to mention human rights in public statements
3. Sent unauthorized invitation letters to Chinese delegations to visit the U.S.
4. Sent unauthorized proclamations to the Chinese consulate
5. All the above actions were exchanged for the business success of her husband in China, luxurious trips to China, and other gifts, etc.
